Ph.D. Students

Mathew Salas (Fall 24 – Present) is a Ph.D. student with the Department of Electrical Engineering at Colorado School of Mines. Mathew earned a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and a Minor in Mathematics from New Mexico Tech in 2024. He received the Tech Scholar designation from New Mexico Tech for demonstrating superior scholastic competence and conduct. His research interests include systems engineering, communications technology, and signal processing.

Xin Xiong (Fall 24 - Present) is a Ph.D. student with the Department of Electrical Engineering at Colorado School of Mines. She obtained the B.S. degree in Electronic Information Engineering from University of Science and Technology of China in 2020. She joined Dr.Shao's research group in fall 2024. Her research intrests include optical wireless communications, intelligent reflecting surfaces and machine learning.

Andre Arguelles (Fall 24 – Present) is a Ph.D. student with the Department of Electrical Engineering at Colorado School of Mines. Andre earned his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Florida International University in 2017 with focuses in RF engineering and cyber security. He then continued his education and received his M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering in 2021 focusing on satellite communication systems. Since 2017, he has also worked as a professional engineer at Lockheed Martin and completed their early career Engineering Leadership Development Program. His research interests include deep space networks, in-space resource collection systems, and wireless optical methods for power, communications, and sensing.

Matthew Dodd (Spring 2025 - Present) is a Ph.D. Student in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Colorado School of Mines. He completed his MSEE at Mines in 2024 and his BS in Materials Science and Engineering with a minor in Physics at University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2018. He has worked in industry as a hardware designer for software defined radios, phased array antennas, consumer electronics, and medical devices. His research interests include computational electromagnetics, optimization methods, and antenna arrays for sensing and communication.

Ruikun Wu (Fall 25 – Present) is a Ph.D. student with the Department of Electrical Engineering at Colorado School of Mines. He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Automation from Yangtze University, China, in 2019, followed by an M.S. in Control Science and Engineering from Northeastern University, China, in 2022. Following his master’s studies, he has served as a Robotics Algorithm Engineer in Shenzhen, specializing in the development of SLAM systems and robotic calibration algorithms. His research interests include deep learning, reinforcement learning, swarm formation control for UAVs, and environmental monitoring systems.
